Theories of Development
1. Jean Piaget’s Stage Theory of Cognitive Development
Cognitive development refers to the gradual growth of a person’s mental functionality in the process of one’s biological evolution. An individual is able to transform into different states as he/she continues to advance in age. There are several stages in cognitive development. The first stage is referred to as the Formal Operational Thought. This stage is usually attained when an individual reaches the age of about 11 years. It however proceeds even into adulthood until the age of approximately 20 years. At this stage, an individual begins to relate with situations so that he/she analyzes them and takes some aspects into consideration (Oakley 4).
