The Relationship Between Language And Thought

Based on the readings we’ve done so far, I want you to first summarize the prominent arguments made about the relationship between language and thought. Then, consider how you think/act in your first (or second) language. Use your own experiences as a speaker and/or writer of that language to support or contradict the main points presented in the readings.

You will be using vivid description and effective narration to pull your readers into those experiences -- by showing rather than telling -- but you will also be conveying the larger significance of those experiences as they relate to our understanding of language, thought, and culture. Fine details and clear connections will make your readers care more about what you have to say.

Remember, you are writing this paper for several reasons. First, you want to entertain your audience with a good story. Second, you need to reflect critically on the readings and the ideas presented within, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with them.

In addition, you will be exercising the writing muscles that you’ve already developed: narration, description, illustration, organization, development, and so on. You will be strengthening these muscles in the writing that we’ll be doing throughout the semester.
