The History and Development of Forensic Photography and its Current Practices
Forensic photography falls under the field of forensic science and entails documentation of suspected and convicted criminals, as well as crime scenes. The field experienced major developments in the late 19th century and has since advanced as one of the most popular means of crime scene identification and collection of evidence. The earliest developments in forensic photography occurred following the modernization of the criminal justice systems in the era of photographic realism. Police work in evidence collection and forensic photography has experienced significant developments in the 19th and 20th centuries (Ribaux, Walsh, & Margot, 2006). With the increasing rate of criminal activities in the last two centuries, governments have been interested in collecting forensic data about their citizens.
The earliest documented forensic photography dates back to around 1843 to 1844 in Belgium. There is also evidence of collected forensic photography in Denmark around 1851. The practice of forensic photography at the time was, however, not ruled as technical and had not been endorsed and recognized by the available legal documentations.
