The Five Bases Of Power
Length: 3 pages (825 Words)
Power is an important concept in business applications for good performance and the achievement of goals and objectives of the company. Leaders employ different bases of power either singly or in combination. Bases of power can either be formal or personal. The five bases of power include coercive, legitimate, expert, reward and referent powers. The use of the different bases affects communication in business settings and thus the ultimate performance among employees.
The first type of power is the coercive type and relies on the use of force to ensure tasks are implemented. The leadership is usually in accordance with the manager’s subjective preferences and is regarded as formal. Employees are forced by the manager to do tasks with threats such that failure to comply will result in punishment. The leader expresses full authority and control while limiting the freedom of the employees to make choices.
