By definition, shaft alignment is the process of the positioning of the rational centers of two or more shafts in such a way that they are co-linear when the machines are under normal functioning conditions. A good shaft alignment is not defined by the total indicator reading, also known as the TIR, of the coupling hubs or the shafts, but it is controlled by the proper centers of rotation of the shaft that supports members, which are the machines bearings. There are shaft alignment tolerances which are normally governed by the coupling manufactures specifications of designed. The original role playes by a flexible coupling is in accommodating the small amounts of shaft misalignment that remain after the shaft alignment has been completed with the use of a straight edge or in feeler gauges.
