A model is considered an idea that conveys its message through symbols or physical visualization. In this consideration, a model can either be diagrammatical, vocal or numerical. A nursing model is an idea upon which nursing curriculum is based. Thus, nursing models are the major ideas that contribute to the development of the nursing profession. Besides adhering to the statutory laws that govern the nursing profession, nurses are expected to fulfill their professional duties while following an agreed code of best practices for nurses. Use of nursing models results in the development of best practices in nursing, collectively improving the profession over time. Nursing models, therefore, developed in response to a need for the definition of what nursing is, and the potential of what it could be. Further, they define the beliefs values and aims of the profession and the skills required in the practice of nursing. Nursing models also offer guidelines on practice and education. While the models were once widely used, their relevance has declined in recent years. This paper seeks to analyze Roy’s Adaptation Model and its application to the nursing profession as an illustration of how nursing theory impacts nursing profession.
