Psychology of Athletes

Athletics is both a physical and a psychological activity that starts with a talent, a passion, and motivation. Motivation forms the foundation of all the athletic activities and aids in their accomplishment. With no determination and desire to improve the performance in sports, all the other psychological factors; including focus, intensity, confidence, and emotions are meaningless. To become a good athlete, one must be motivated to do all it takes to maximize abilities and attain goals. The other psychological factors that shape athletics include confidence, the desire to compete and succeed, and self-esteem. The study of the psychology of athletes is informed by the fact that not everyone succeeds in athletic activities. It takes the right talent, passion, and determination for success in athletics. The topic is of significance because it helps coaches and athletics managers understand the strategies to improve the performance of their trainees. This paper discusses the relevant aspects of psychology related to athletics; or what is also called the psychology of athletes.

Psychologically defined, motivation is the ability to initiate a task and persist in it. For people to perform their best in athletics, they must be willing to initiate the process of being an athlete. Likewise, one must be willing to maintain their efforts until they have attained the goals of becoming an athlete (Sharp & Hodge, 2014). The motivation is an intrinsic factor that is generated from the mind. It is so important in athletics because one must be willing to work hard and be ready to experience fatigue. Motivation is one of the most important psychological aspects in athletics that impacts the performance of the athletes and those willing to develop their talents as athletes. This also includes the mental preparation to get tired and recover for the next day’s activities.
