Published assessment tools help an instructor determine the client’s particular strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and challenges. The resource is used as a tool to develop strategies that will enable the client reach the desired goals (Aiken, 1997). It also helps a counselor identify areas to probe in their psychological tests and assessments to understand a functional client’s abilities and potential strengths in the community and educational settings.

Behavioral observation assists a counselor to know what kind of psychological test can be used. This can be done by observing the client’s personal act; is he or she nervous, smug, or calm or maintains an eye contact (Anastasi, 1968). Behavioral information often plays a crucial part in gathering relevant information needed to select a psychological test. Counselors may also use behavioral observations in addition to the clinical information to determine which treatment is appropriate for a particular client.

The counselor can conduct an interview before selecting the appropriate psychological test to be used on the client. Three main ways can be used to question. The first is verbal and face-to-face interaction. The client may reveal a lot of information that can be helpful. The second way is para-verbal. In this way, the customer’s tone, speaking pace, volume, and inflection can guide on which test is appropriate (Aiken, 1997). The third is the situation. The client’s cooperation and participation may determine which test to use.
