Derek Bok was a past president of Harvard University. His main arguments in the essay are in defense of free speech at the university. He introduces the problem with an incident at the campus of two students who hung Confederate flags in the public view and then he describes how the students reacted to the incident.
The main intent of the author writing the essay is to reach the students and the university management. For many years, the students in the Harvard University lacked the freedom to express themselves. The two students who displayed the Confederate flags felt it fit and proud to do so. But a third student protests the flags.
