John Stuart Mill is one between the two biggest contributors to the theory of utilitarianism, with the other being Jeremy Bentham. The theory enunciates on social liberty of freedom by proposes the acquiring of maxim benefits while being cautionary to inflict the least damage. Stuart Mill expounds on the theory in his book ‘On Liberty’ where he describes his ideal society and its relation with the state. He proceeds to enunciate the exquisite balance between liberty and authority (Smith 239).
His essay, in a manner that I can identify with, deliberates on a doctrine of poise between individuality but which unbridled, could lead to ‘tyranny of the majority’. He discusses his three declared individual liberties, their corresponding remonstrations through government censorship and debates on an individual’s role in the society by elaborating on his two maxis theories.
