This is not helped by big pharmaceutical companies scaling back or even eliminating research due to a perceived lack of profitability in manufacturing and selling antibiotics compared to other drugs.
What steps do you think engineering and the sciences, and society in general need to take to address the problem of tackling antibiotic resistance?

Addressing the Problem of Tackling Antibiotic Resistance
Due to increased misuse of antibiotics, many strains of bacteria have developed resistance against medication. The problem of antibiotic resistance has many dimensions, especially based on the fact that many pharmaceutical companies have now started to manufacture broad spectrum antibiotics. When this happens, some strains of bacteria cannot be specifically targeted. One of the best solutions to the problem of resistance is the development of highly specific targets in antibiotic development (Buckland 4). Every antibiotic should be designed in such a way that it can only kill a particular bacterium. This, however, must be done with care by ensuring there is a prior bacterium screening to identify the specific strain causing the infection. A spectrum of antibiotics is unsuitable, unless when it is the last resort, especially if the physician does not know the exact strain of bacterium causing the infection (Moskvitch).
