Performance appraisal is the process by which a manager examines and assesses the work behavior of an employee through comparison with preset standards. The manager documents the outcomes of the comparison and uses the results to give feedback to the employee to indicate areas that need improvement. Performance appraisals are used to establish who needs what training, who will be promoted, retained, demoted, or fired. The limited pool of funds has prompted organizations to formulate models that determine allocation of the funds. The models provide a method for an organization to determine the workers that have made contributions to the company’s development so that they can be rewarded accordingly. Performance appraisals help managers and their employees to plan for employee development through promotions and supplementary training. The appraisals are also instrumental in recognizing shortcomings and areas employees need to improve (Locke & Latham, 2013). Performance appraisals provide employees with the big-picture feedback on their performance to justify bonuses and salary increases, as well as firing decisions.
