Is it likely that CCS will become a significant part of the low-C mix?
Certainly carbon capture and storage (CCS) will emerge a major part of low- C mix. The advent of carbon capture and storage will lead to carbon dioxide being managed in quantities many orders of scale greater than it is currently. Throughout the world, CCS is perceived to be a major carbon abatement technology (Cloete, 2014). This is because the mechanism used will be in a position to arrest millions of tons of carbon dioxide from major emitters –such as power plants, and then for it to be transferred using ships and pipeline before being injected into earth’s crust where it will remain held. As a matter of fact, there are plans within the European Union for up to 12 demonstration schemes to be constructed by next year (2015). In addition, there are recommendations for a further 120 demonstration schemes to be online by 2030 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2000). All in all, this is a clear indication that carbon capture and storage is seriously considered a significant part of low carbon.
