How Religion Defines and Maintains the Subordinate Position of Women in the Society
The Muslim minority in India is about 11.5% of the general population. The main population is Hindu with other smaller groups of Christians and Jews. The Muslim- Hindu clash brought about the partitioning of India placing the Muslim minority in a very precarious position. The partitioning led to the development of Pakistan in 1947. As a result, Muslim women in Indian today face double oppression. The first oppression is the part of the patriarchal community in which women are discriminated against and as part of the minority community where they are subjected to discrimination by the Hindu fundamentalism. In China, the issue is worse.
