European powers that first explored America in the 16th and 17th century had different approaches of treating the indigenous American Indians (Hyland et.al 48). The French were interested in trade while the English settlers were interested in Indian land. Furthermore, the Spanish viewed the Indians as a form of labor which could be exploited to dig large tracks of land (Hyland et.al 49). The Spanish established colonies in America to assist them mobilize human labor for their industries. The colonialists often used brutal methods to force native people to provide labor.
