Hero’s Quest In “A Worn Path” By Eudora Welty
Length: 5 pages (1500 Words)
Hero’s Quest in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty:
The story starts with an old woman by the name Phoenix Jackson, who lives with her grandson in a place referred to as the Old Natchez Place. She acts as the main character who demonstrates an archetypal hero’s journey. The author portrays her as the hero of all the ages, even though we are made aware of this after the transformation that takes place later in the story. Phoenix takes regular trips with her grandson to town in for her grandson’s throat condition. However, this time she comes to town alone. The journey represents a pattern of life, as she is aware of the path she has to take when she says “Something always take a hold of me on this hill-pleads I should stay” (Welty, xroads.virginia.edu).
Phoenix journey is comprised of several stages, the first being the call, or the need to leave due her grandson’s medical condition that requires her to go to town for a bottle of medicine. Though it’s not mentioned in the text, the point where she leaves the safety of the world and decides to embark on her journey is what analysts of heroic stories often refer to the threshold stage, where she finds herself in the outskirts of the forest and begins her journey. On her journey, she meets up with a black dog that seems to disrupt her journey and she decides to lie down. A white male hunter who had a chain with a dog and they have a little conversation, and manages to chase away the black dog for her.
