Gulliver’s Influence

Question

Please answer prompt 3 and follow the instruction.

The reading is "Swift, Gulliver’s Travels (1726), Book 4 (Houyhnhnms & Yahoos!)"

Please only use the reading to answer the prompt,

Comp. Lit. 30b, Homework option 3 (second half of the quarter)

Swift, Gulliver’s Travels

Due: Tuesday, March 10th

Instructions: Choose one of the following prompts. Write a response essay of no more than two pages (the usual format: one-inch margins, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, etc.). Include a title page with your name and the title so that you can start your essay at the top of the first page. The purpose of these assignments is to take a position with regard to one of the readings and persuade your T.A. that your point of view makes sense. You do not need to write a lengthy introductory paragraph, it’s enough to state your idea clearly so your reader knows what to expect. In the “body” paragraphs, be sure to avoid plot summaries. Your T.A. is familiar with the texts. Only mention those details (through direct quotes or paraphrasing) that directly support your position and help you make a point. You also do not need a substantial concluding paragraph. It is always a good idea to make an outline before you begin writing. Feel free to contact me or your T.A. if you have questions.

 1. Gulliver as portrait-artist.

To pick up a word that we were thinking about last week, it’s possible to say that Gulliver creates a “portrait” of human society for the Houyhnhnms as he describes its various institutions and features. What kind of portrait does he create? Does he tell the truth? How do the problems of lying and deception fit in? How does Gulliver’s description influence the Houyhnhnms’ impression of humankind and Gulliver himself?

2. “The thing which was not.”

If you choose this topic, discuss the concept of lying in relation to the Houyhnhnm culture. Why do they have no concept for it in their language? How is Gulliver able to explain it to them? Is their society completely free of lying and deception? If not, where do you see it. And if so, how does it affect their interpersonal (or inter-equine?) relations?

3. Gulliver’s influence.

The Houyhnhnms’ society is sometimes compared a “Utopia” – an idealized model of society. What makes their society ideal? Does Gulliver’s presence among them lead to any perceptible change, whether positive or corrupting?
