Argument Outline Assignment
Purpose: To explain, in outline form, an argument from one of the articles we have read.
Audience: Someone who has not read the article and doesn’t have a lot of time. So, they need to be able to understand the argument at a glance.
Choose one argument from the article to present in an outline of a page or less.
Choose 2 or 3 headings that capture the main idea of the argument you chose.
Write 2 or 3 bullet points to explain the heading. One of these bullet points can be a quotation, but the should mostly be in your own words.
Supply a properly formatted bibliography, either APA or MLA.
|Argument||You have chosen on argument from the reading to explain. Your explanation is one page or less.||You have chosen an argument to explain from the reading, but your outline goes off topic. Your outline exceeds one page.||It is not clear from your outline which argument you are explaining.|
|Headings||The headings make sense to a reader who is unfamiliar with the text.||The headings make some sense if a reader thinks about them for a few minutes.||A reader unfamiliar with the text cannot decipher your headings.|
|Bullet points||Your reader gains even greater understanding of the headings from the bullet points. The bullet points are organized in a logical manner. The majority of the bullet points are in your own words.||Your reader gains some more information about the heading from your bullet points. They are well organized. There is more than one quotation per heading.||Your reader does not gain much from reading your bullet points and/or your bullet points are all quotations.|
