Every Rose Has It's Thorn

Known as a Southern Gothic writer, William Faulkner style of writing reveals much about the grotesque ways of the south and its approach to sexual politics. In Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily", there is a vivid awareness of a system of sexual politics and it lends itself to a feminist analysis with the old and new ways of the south. The story takes place in the late 1800's, when woman were submissive to men and expected to take care of the household.

Emily Grierson, the main character, is portrayed as being weak, co-dependent, and a woman who is victimized by her society. We find in the end of the story that she was actually a strong and independent woman who had many secrets.
