Essay On Generosity As A Virtue
Length: 4 pages (1129 Words)
Generosity is that virtue of giving and sharing. A person gives freely without expecting anything in return. It is the virtue that prevents people from getting tied down by concerns about their possessions. It deals with sharing money or its equivalents such as clothing, shelter and food, and any other resources that human beings require for survival. It is the virtue used in place of charity, the act of giving without expecting anything back to help a person in need. It is the virtue used in times of a natural disaster when individuals voluntarily offer relief efforts as gifts in the form of time, money, goods and other resources. It is the act of spending only, labor and time for the benefit of others with no rewards. It is not based on a person’s economic status alone, but should include a person’s pure intentions of looking out for the common good of the entire society and giving to them freely. It reflects a person’s readiness and willingness to help others.
Generosity is based on the possession and consumption of goods that may end up harming us or wasting our time. We are harmed when we take in too much of stuff, and we are harmed when we take in too little of it. The more goods that the person has, the bigger the storage facilities he uses and the larger the share of his worries. It becomes junk that must be give away. However, it is still precious for those that have little of the goods. Generosity becomes the go-between virtue between the vice of having everything and wanting more and that of having nothing and needing everything.
