Question #1:

The nine planetary boundaries include:

  • Stratospheric ozone depletion
  • The release of novel entities and chemical pollution
  • Extinctions and biodiversity loss
  • Acidification of oceans
  • Climate change
  • Land system change
  • The global hydrological cycle and fresh water consumption
  • Phosphorus and nitrogen flows to the oceans and biosphere
  • Aerosol loading in the atmosphere

Although it may take different duration and commitment to address each of the factors, most of them can be addressed through the normal day-to-day activities. Depletion of the ozone layer, for instance, can be addressed by avoidance of CFCs that may react with the layer leading to more penetration of harmful UV rays (Chauhan 4). Chemical pollution, at the same time, can be avoided or reduced by avoiding burning plastics, use of petrochemicals, and reducing automotive exhaustions. The same way can be used to address acidification of oceans because most chemical pollutants release toxic fumes in the air, such as oxides of sulphur and nitrogen that react with rainfall leading to acid rain. The government and the private sector can join hands in this cause by banning all industries that emit such pollutants into the natural atmosphere.
