Department Of Homeland Security Progress
Length: 11 pages (3025 Words)
The United States Department of Homeland Security commonly abbreviated as DHS is a cabinet agency formed by the federal government, as a response to September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Its primary responsibility is to protect the overall United States including its territories and citizens. The DHS was also tasked to respond to other safety issues such as natural disasters, possible terrorist attacks, and accidents caused by human activities. It was created with a mission of preparing, preventing, and responding to any domestic emergencies for instance terrorism. DHS assumed its duties on March 1, 2003. The agency replaced the military duties within or outside its borders; where as the Department of Defense was charged with military actions in foreign missions (Stana, 2011).
However, the September 11 attack was a historic event for the larger US activities that led to the formation of national service (Hite, 2009). Such aimed at tightening the security and safety measures of the America. The declaration of war on terror by the US as a response to the event affected the whole world. This is true because the terrorists expanded their targets on Americans living in the foreign countries. The expansion of the military actions in the foreign countries has also made the need to strengthen the mandate of DHS in protecting the US citizens to its best. This means that DHS is the major security Department in the United States that needs radical improvements from time to time, especially on the current technological world.
