The story line has no quarrels with Islam, but it illustrates the lack of elasticity of the hand of the law which may frustrate the spirit of the way. The most nations under religious laws experience this situation. The law attempts to regulate hypothetical situation before they arise. If laws are replaced by principles, they might be a better fit with human nature. Nader and Simin a happily married couple, have an 11-year old daughter, Termeh. Nader's father also lives with them. The couple agrees to move abroad where Termeh prospects might be better. Nader declines to leave when Simin leaves for her mother's place where she sues' for divorce, although the two want to remain married.
