Mr. P is a 40 year-old male who weighs 150 pounds and he is recovering in your trauma unit from a major accident. He is on a ventilator, has a central line for IVs and antibiotics, an arterial line to measure continuous blood pressures, a small-bore feeding tube, two chest tubes and a Foley catheter. After 3 days, M. P. develops gram-negative septicemia and pneumonia. His provider has started him on gentamicin sulfate (Garamycin) and ampicillin/sulbactam (Unasyn) IV.
