Length: 5 pages (1375 Words)
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, irreversible mental disorder that gradually destroys thinking skills and memory. The disease also affects the ability to perform even the simplest tasks in the daily routine. Most people with this disease have the symptoms appearing in their mid-60s. Although estimates of the disease prevalence vary, it is estimated that more than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is currently ranked as the sixth cause of mortality in the United States. However, some recent studies have indicated the possibility of Alzheimer’s disease ranking third behind cancer and heart diseases as a cause of death for the elderly people. Alzheimer’s is also the leading cause of dementia among older adults. The later refers to the loss of cognitive functioning, remembering, thinking, and behavioral abilities. This may also interfere with the activities and daily life of an individual. Dementia occurs in varying severity starting with the mild stage to the most severe stage when an individual must completely depend on others for the basic activities of daily life (Viola, Sbarboro, Sureka, De, Bicca, Wang, & Klein, 2015). This paper discusses Alzheimer’s disease by considering the national organizations that have been formed for this disease and other relevant research information on Alzheimer’s disease.
