Microsoft’s Excel is a fairly powerful spreadsheet tool that has been optimized as a financial analytic and presentation tool. However, it can also be used to store records. When used as an analytical tool for large amounts of data it is very efficient and can be used to handle a large variety of computational tasks on a large quantity of data. When used as a record keeping tool, its capabilities are, at best, like those of a word processor with a little better presentation.
Though Excel can perform some of the activities that Access does, their capabilities are quite different. The major capabilities of Excel and Access have been compared below.
